It Begins

We just finished first week of school! Mirs really likes her new 4th Grade teacher and had a good week, except Wednesday she got violently ill and had to take a day at home. Whatever it was, was a very very nasty 24-hour bug.

Last weekend we had great fun at Susie's house in Onalaska with Mom & Dad & Les & Dan and Susie, Sal & Maria for a multi-birthday party. Saw way cool pictures of the Canadian Rockies from Susie & Sal's big trip and had fun playing games. Great time. Next day we were in Shakopee to visit with Kris' folks as brother Steve was in town from Oregon. I think we drove 500 miles in a little over 24 hours. That's a big Labor Day weekend.

Break for Politics: The Convention

Believe me, nobody was more frightened by the resemblance than me!

The herd of elephants occupying our fair city this last week has finally departed so life (and traffic) can return to normal. Of course, now the campaign season starts in a big, big way. For the record, we're backing Obama. Prior to 2000 I used to be a swing-voter, but honestly the republican party has just gotten too weird and extreme for me. I'm really not into the whole gay-hating thing, and the growing anti-science and anti-intellectualist attitudes in the party I find disturbing and are enough to keep me away for the forseeable future.

McCain could have been one of those moderating influences in the party that could have brought it back around. But I think McCain goofed up. If he'd picked Pawlenty for a running mate he'd have gotten some broad appeal and maybe even gotten a shot at winning Minnesota. Instead he picked Palin, another big-oil-state conservative like those that have been running the show for 8 years. On a personal level, the contempt she showed for community organizers in her speech was really offensive. Speaking as one who deals with community organizers daily (and writes the performance reviews of one of them), these are hard-working people, with real responsibilities and a relatively thankless job, whatever these snobs think. So there.

Amen - I am so tired of the mud
slinging - wish they would discuss
something that makes a little sense
rather than all the bashing but I guess that is the way of politics
now.
