We're back! We were without power for more than 24 hours but once again we have technology. 2 nights ago we were awoken at 4am by thunder and so-loud-its-scarey wind. I looked out Mira's window just in time to hear the CRACK and see the tree go down just outside our house and we immediately decided it was time to head for the basement. It was about 30 minutes later that the power went out. The next morning, there were trees down everywhere -- one house a block awayfrom us was completely destroyed when a huge tree fell in on it (I heard everyone got out OK). Our tree (shown above) had the good sense to fall neatly between our house and our neighbor Barry's.

(Above) One other large tree fell partway and leaned against the railroad bridge over Chatsworth Street -- as I went bicycling under it later that day, I heard a CRACK just as I passed under it, and about 3 seconds later a CRASH behind me and I watched as this big old tree crashed down into the space I had just passed through. I SWEAR I didn't touch it, kick it, tease it or anything, it just fell.

(Above) This big old tree came down at the southwest corner of Lake Como about half a mile from our house. I parked the bike in the foreground to show scale, this thing was huge. We lost a lot of shade in this storm, a lot of big, beautiful old trees.

Great pictures but yet another sad event.
At least the tree didn't fall on your house and you were all safe. I called you last night to see if you were out watching the meteors and there was no answer!!, now we know why. So what are you going to do with that tree? Cut it up yourselves?
Yeah, we were fairly lucky, especially compared to the folks who were a few blocks north and west of us. And fortunately my neighbor Barry has done a lot of tree work for the county so he's pretty handy with a chainsaw :-) between him, myself and 3 neighbors across the street we got it all cut up and gathered this afternoon, I guess the mayor said everyone could gather their tree debris to the boulevard this week and the tree trucks will come 'round through the neighborhoods to pick it up in the next few days.
